  • Citizens Information Board Phone Service

The Citizens information Board phone service provides easy access to information and advice by telephone and e-mail.

The service has a full range of information on rights and entitlements and on state and other social services.

  • Financial Assistance Following a Bereavement

The following once-off payments may be available to help families following the difficult time of the aftermath of a homicide:

1. Assistance with funeral costs
Urgent needs payments
Rent or Mortgage interest Supplements
Short-or long- term social welfare payment
 Contact your Social welfare office for eligibility

"Information for those affected by bereavement" is a publication produced jointly by the Department of Social affairs and Comhairle. This free booklet provides information on dealing with the practical and material matters that arise following a death.

It is available from your local Welfare local office or from your nearest Citizen Information Centre.
            2. Bereavement Grant
Bereavement Grant is a once-off payment made in respect of deaths that occur on or after 2 February 1999. Eligibility for this grant is not related to your ability to pay for the funeral. Your eligibility is usually based on PRSI contributions. If eligible, the grant is € 850

The completed BG1 form must be sent within 12 months of the date of the death to:

  • Death Certificate

Following a homicide, the death will automatically be registered, as an inquest will take place at the request of the Coroner.
Prior to the inquest, the Coroner’s office dealing with the case will provide an Interim Certificate of the Fact of Death, which may be acceptable to banks, insurance companies and other institutions. Some of these institutions may accept a copy of the death notice from the newspaper.
Contact information for the Coroner for your district is available from your local authority.

In due course to obtain a Death Certificate you must complete an application for Death Certificate form. This form can be obtained at your local health board office or downloaded from:
